Earlier this summer I found an old wooden box at one of my favorite shops. I don’t know what its original purpose was, but it may have been some sort of sifter…? I can’t tell you exactly what drew me to it, but something did, and it ended up coming home with me. I have no idea how that keeps happening. 🙂
Anyway, I brought it home and left it on the back porch for about a month, after which it promptly relocated to the basement, a/k/a the place for things I bring home and have no idea what to do with. Ahem.
Happily, I figured out what I wanted to do with this one (because sometimes things live down there for years). I was going to turn it into a plate rack/basket thing-y. Ok, so Jordan was actually going to do the “turning it into” part, but I gave very specific instructions. Something along the lines of “I would like these baskets to hang inside this box so I can then hang the entire thing on the wall…and put plates and stuff in it…” 🙂
The baskets were also waiting for assignment in the basement, (I found them earlier this year at World Market), but I didn’t care for how dark they were originally, so Jordan lightened them up with a little gray spray paint
And then attached them with a heavy duty wire to the bottom of the box.
The box itself is made of wood sides with a wire mesh bottom. I forgot to snap a picture before the baskets were attached, but here it is…
Kind of see where I was going with this one?
We hung it in the dining room, added a wicker charger and dinner plate to each basket,
and here it is on the wall…
Isn’t it pretty?? I love the little dose of farmhouse it brings to the room. I have been feeling a little blah about the dining room lately, and this has inspired me to make a few more changes. Stay tuned for that…
And I didn’t forget about fall decorating – that’s coming up on Friday. 🙂

Where did you purchase the curtain rods?
Tonya says
I found them at Lowe’s.
ammogden says
How did you obtain the wainscoting look? is this original or did you do it yourself??
ammogden says
obviously I love it 🙂
Tonya says
It’s original to the house. 🙂

Could you share what stain you used for your floors and what level of gloss is on the finish? I’m remodeling and putting down red oak flooring in alternating 3″ and 5″ planks. I’m looking for a nice rich brown color for the floors to go with London Fog walls, but it’s hard to tell doing sample boards. Your stain and finish appear to be exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks.
Tonya says
Dark Walnut stain and semi-gloss finish (on oak) – both by Minwax. 🙂

Hi Tonya!!! I am new to your blog, but i have quickly fallen in love with it!!!! I would love to try to replicate your plate box!! Will you give me the dimensions of your box?? Your home is incredible!!!! and you have the most awesome decorating ideas!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Tonya says
Hi Bonnie, thank you so much for your sweet words! More than happy to share – the box is about 36 inches tall, 18 inches wide, and 4.5 inches deep – if you need anything else, just let me know! So glad you’re enjoying the blog – I’m happy to have you here! 😀
Audra says
A little unrelated, but can you tell me about your crown molding? I can’t seem to find anything that looks right, but yours look great! Do you know the manufacturer or dimensions?
Tonya says
Hi Audra! The crown is original to the house, so I’m unsure of the manufacturer (our house was built in the 1930s), but I can tell you it’s about 2 1/2 inches tall. We’ve been very careful to preserve it for the few projects we’ve done that have affected it so that we were able to reuse it – I have yet to see any like it at the big box stores. Good luck on your search – I hope you find something you love! 🙂
Andrea says
Beautiful! What paint color and brand did you use here for the wall color?
Tonya says
Thank you Andrea! The top portion of the wall is London Fog and the bottom is Simply White – both by Benjamin Moore. 🙂
Andrea says
Thank you!
Ashley Yarbrough says
Hey what brand did you get the London fog paint in?
Tonya says
Benjamin Moore 🙂
Kate says
Where is your rug from?
Tonya says
Hi Kate! The rug is from Pottery Barn. I found it at the outlet, but they still carry it in the catalog if you don’t have an outlet nearby. Here is the link http://www.potterybarn.com/products/round-jute-rug/?pkey=cnatural-fiber-rugs&&cnatural-fiber-rugs. I have the 8 foot rug. Hope that helps!
Kate says
Thanks!

Where did you find your curtains? My wall cor is very similar and I’m having such a hard time finding pinch pleat curtains in the right shade of white!
Tonya says
I found them online at JC Penny about ten years ago. They were on clearance and I wish I had bought about 20 more panels at that time because I love them and have never been able to find anything similar at a price point I can stomach! 🙂
Jennifer @ Decorated Chaos says

LOVE this! I have been looking for a metal basket just like that one for a few weeks now and I’m running to World Market tonight to see if they still have these! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Dream. Create. Inspire. last week; you were our most popular link! I’m pinning this to my personal kitchen decor board so I can make it next month and I would love to have you join us again tonight! http://tastefullyfrugal.org/2015/09/dream-create-inspire-link-16.html
Tonya says
Thank you so much!! 🙂
Tone says
Oh I love, love, LOVE this idea! Its very lightly that I`ll steel it! I have a corner in my diningroom just like that, and I have no idea what to do with the empty spot on the wall. Wich makes ME crazy, and my husband even crazier, because I could hang something on every blank spot if I was allowed to (wich I am not…..).
It really gives that perfect subtle farmhouse look! Did I mention that I love it? Hahaha…
And the bench! Did you make it yourself? If so, I would love to know how 🙂
Tone
Tonya says
Thank you, Tone – I’m so glad you like our little plate rack! My husband built the bench and to be honest, other than show him a picture of what I had in mind, I didn’t have too much involvement with it, so I don’t know how good my “bench building” tutorial would be. Maybe I can get him to do one for us sometime so I can share it here! 🙂

I love it so much!!

Thank you! 🙂

Hi Tonya,
I just love your rustic plate rack. Now I’ll be looking for the perfect wooden box so that I can make one! This is my first visit to your blog, from Coastal Charm, and I’ll definitely follow you now. Thanks for sharing this idea…

This is such a beautiful idea! I bet a ton of people will love it! Pinning it now!
Tonya says
Thank you! I was not expecting the response I have received for this – but I guess sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that connect the most. 🙂

It’s true! I’m glad your are getting the attention you deserve!!
Suzan says
That is simply gorgeous – what a fabulous idea – I’m pinning now – thanks so much for sharing !
Tonya says
Thank you so much, Suzan! 🙂
Jenny says
This is such a great idea! I just stood in front of one of those screen things at a flea market for a good couple of minutes, and ended up not getting in. I’m kicking myself for not snagging it up. Your plate rack is absolutely adorable!!
Tonya says
Thank you, Jenny! Trust me, I know all too well about passing something up and then regretting it later. You’d think I would learn by now! 🙂
Sue @ Serendipity says
In Oregon those boxes are drying trays for filberts (hazelnuts) and we love them too. Your idea to use them with baskets for plate racks is fabulous and I will be on the lookout for baskets!
Tonya says
Thank you for sharing, Sue! Maybe my box was used for something similar – I learned something new today. 🙂
Sara says
love this plate rack! Your style is beautiful!
Tonya says
Thank you so much, Sara! 🙂
Natalie says
Love the idea! I also love that if you get sick of the white plates, you can always switch them out for colored ones depending on the season.
Tonya says
Absolutely! That is a great idea. 🙂
Mom says
What a great idea!! I love it! And yes you both make a great team!!
Tonya says
Thank you 🙂
alaynascreations says
How great is that?! I don’t think I would have ever thought to combine the wooden box with the basket in that way. It turned out nicely and looks fantastic in that spot.
I am co-hosting the #HomeMattersParty link party this month and would love to have you stop by for a visit. The door opens for the next party tonight at midnight! http://www.alaynascreations.co
Tonya says
Thank you Alayna! I will be stopping by. 🙂
Jamie | anderson + grant says
Genius! This is the perfect mix of some unrelated objects. I love how you chose to put the plate in front of the charger. The plate would have looked boring on it’s own, but the charger gives it that decorator’s touch!
Tonya says
Thanks, Jamie! Those wicker chargers are my go to for setting a table, so I figured they should work good on the wall too, right? 🙂
Terry says
I love this idea! The entire space is just soothing and lovely! Well done! Love your work! I’d love for you to pop by my blog and share your works at my Making Broken Beautiful Party beginning this evening 6:00pm (MST)! http://thecuratorscollection.wordpress.com
