Summer Living Room

Summer Living Room

Whenever I come across a picture of a room I like in a magazine, or on Instagram, or wherever it may be, I always imagine that whoever decorated that room conjured up a vision in their head and then went to work executing it flawlessly – just the way they had planned out in their mind.

And if that really does happen for those people, I want to know their secret, because I promise you it does not happen for me.  Very rarely, anyway.

Instead, I usually stumble my way through, working with things on the fly and making it up as I go.  Sometimes, things fall into place nicely. And then sometimes it’s a bit of a struggle.

This time around it was a struggle.

I hauled so many things up from the basement and nothing was working for me.

I think at one point I sat down amidst the pillow covers and candlesticks and vase fillers and said, “I hate decorating”.

Casual Summer Living Room

Casual Summer Living Room

“Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.” – Billy Baldwin

What comes to mind when you think of summer?

My mind usually goes straight to the lake first – I am a Michigan girl after all. Sandy beaches, dark blue water, lush green grass, beautiful sunsets.  But even more than that it’s the feeling of long slow days, dinners cooked on the grill, backyard conversations around a bonfire, and not taking anything in life too seriously.

That’s how I wanted my house to feel too.  Casual, not overdone, slightly unpolished.

And neutral, neutral, neutral.

Shocking.  I know.

I just can’t help myself.

Seven Finds to Refresh a Room for Summer – High and Low

Seven Finds to Refresh a Room for Summer – High and Low

How about a little high-low fun today?

I had a number of you tell me you enjoyed these posts way back when…and since it’s been a while since we’ve done one…and since I aim to please…

Let’s go shopping, shall we?

No matter whether you want to splurge or save, I searched and shopped my way through the internet last night to round up a great collection of awesome décor to bring a little summer flair to your home this season.

A little bit beachy.

Kind of casual.

A touch rustic.

Pleasantly neutral.

Perfectly summer.

Simply Vintage Summer Mantel

Simply Vintage Summer Mantel

You know how the New Year rolls around and everyone picks a word to describe or represent or inspire what they want to focus on/improve on for the upcoming year?

I didn’t do that.

I’ve never done that.

For the record, I think it’s a great idea – it’s just that I’m too lazy/too much of an over-thinker to make that kind of commitment 😉

But…

If I had picked a word – I think maybe my word would have been simplify.

Summer Saturday Ramblings

Summer Saturday Ramblings

Happy Saturday!

It’s been a while. And I’ve had some time off this week so my chores are all caught up (ok, that’s not really true – but most…ok…some of my chores are caught up).  And I’m avoiding the chores I still have to do (there. are. just. too. many), so I thought I’d pop in and chat a bit today and share a few things that I’m loving for summer.

Summer is here, friends!  It’s that time of year when the humidity kicks in to overdrive so that your skin never really feels like it dries after a shower.  Which can make getting into your jeans something of an Olympic sport – complete with high kicks, squats, and lots of jumping up and down.  Please tell me I’m not the only one who experiences this.

Summer Dining Room

Summer Dining Room

Good morning friends!

I hope you all had a beautiful weekend.  I don’t know about where you are, but the weather here has been hot, hot, hot! Much to my surprise, I’m okay with it.  It’s actually been kind of nice…

But ask me again in a few weeks if I still feel that way…I’m not usually a hot weather person. 🙂

So I have a few little updates to share with you from the dining room today.  I was really pretty happy with how it looked for spring, so I didn’t want to change up much, but I did want to tie it in to the living room by incorporating some of the same elements.  I always like these two rooms to flow since they’re right off one another.

A Simple and Casual Summer Living Room

A Simple and Casual Summer Living Room

I always use the seasons as an excuse to change things up around the house.  Sometimes I change a lot, and other times only a little, but I always find it refreshing to move things around and give a space a new identity – even if it’s only a minor one.  Besides…any reason to put some of those pillow covers I have stashed around the house into rotation is a good enough reason for me 😉

When you’re from Michigan, summer immediately brings one thing to mind – the lake.  At least it does in my mind, so I usually like to give things a bit of a lakehouse/coastal vibe when it comes to summer decorating.  Glass bottles, rope accents, weathered or white-washed wood, and colors that reflect the sand, water, and sky are a good way to get that easy going “by the lake” feel.

Summer Decorating

Summer Decorating

When it comes to summer decorating, I usually like to keep things pretty minimal. This year I was feeling inspired by blue, so I decided to go for a laid back, summer cottage feel – something that was simple and easy going, with a coastal touch (Jordan said it feels like a boathouse, so I may have taken things a tad too far – oh well, it’s something fun for a change!).  There are lots of pictures in this one, so get ready! 🙂 [Read more…]
