Easy Vintage Art

Easy Vintage Art

Before I get started with today’s post I just have to say – I cannot even begin to thank you all for the lovely words of support and encouragement after my last post.  That was a tough one to write and an even tougher one to hit the Publish button, but you all made it so much easier. I read each and every comment and message and it all just meant so much.  I always knew I had the very best readers around – I was feeling the love for sure!  Thank you.

So how about we lighten the mood a bit and get back to some decorating today?

Sound like a good plan to you?

Oh good. Me too.

I decided it was time to hang some new art in those floating frames in the bookshelves.  But you all know I can be pretty lazy when it comes to any kind of DIY.

I mean, I love looking at all the things one can make on Pinterest, but when it comes to actually making all the things one can make on Pinterest?  Nah…I’ll leave that to someone else.

Bookshelves and a Little Wine

Bookshelves and a Little Wine

“Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks.” – Dr. Seuss

I have never met a bookshelf I didn’t like.

Never ever.

You neither?

There’s a reason we’re all friends. 🙂

So big is my love of bookshelves, that I’ve always dreamed of having my own little library somewhere in my house, but our house is pretty small, so shortly after we moved in Jordan gave me the next best thing and built those amazing wall to wall bookshelves in the living room you always see.

We drew a concept out on paper and then made some adjustments.

And then we taped it all out with blue painters tape on the wall to get a feel for how it would look in the room.

And then we made a few more adjustments.

And then he started building it in sections out in the garage.

And we primed and painted…and painted some more.

And we muscled each section into the house and installed them against the wall.

And then we painted some more.

And then finally I got to fill those shelves!  It was a pretty great day. 😀

Casual Summer Living Room

Casual Summer Living Room

“Be faithful to your own taste because nothing you really like is ever out of style.” – Billy Baldwin

What comes to mind when you think of summer?

My mind usually goes straight to the lake first – I am a Michigan girl after all. Sandy beaches, dark blue water, lush green grass, beautiful sunsets.  But even more than that it’s the feeling of long slow days, dinners cooked on the grill, backyard conversations around a bonfire, and not taking anything in life too seriously.

That’s how I wanted my house to feel too.  Casual, not overdone, slightly unpolished.

And neutral, neutral, neutral.

Shocking.  I know.

I just can’t help myself.

Styling Bookshelves

Styling Bookshelves

Probably one of the most notable features in our home are the bookshelves along the back wall of the living room. It was the first big project we tackled after moving in – and it’s one of my favorite things about the house now too.

Whether you have a whole wall of shelves like me, or just a small bookshelf tucked into a corner, the right styling can make all the difference. While I’ve seen shelves so full with books they’re practically spilling out, and loved the look, I prefer to use my shelves to house not just my favorite titles, but pictures, and boxes, and other random treasures too. It’s a great way to display some of your favorite things and make them feel relevant in the space. [Read more…]

A Quick Change to the Bookshelves

A Quick Change to the Bookshelves

“To add a library to a house is to give that house a soul.” – Cicero

I have always dreamed of having one whole room as a dedicated library in my house – complete with rolling ladders and overstuffed leather chairs. I have been an avid reader for as long as I can remember, and can spend hours wandering a bookstore, coffee in hand, browsing shelf after shelf, aisle after aisle.   There’s something so calming about being surrounded by books, don’t you think?
