Jordan and I took a little antiquing adventure over the weekend and boy did we find some really great stuff. We loaded the truck with old books, vintage pots, old doors, an old farm table (actually we had to leave that one behind for pick up at a later date – we ran out of room. Next time we will take a trailer. 😉 ), an old medicine cabinet, baskets, random little treasures, and one really awesome, completely one of a kind, wood feeding trough/tray.
I haven’t decided just what I’m going to do with the trough yet, so you’ll have to wait to hear me gush about all of its rusty hardware – chippy white paint – chewed up wood – awesomeness for another day. But it really is one of my favorite finds to date.
I say that about all my treasures, but I really mean it this time. 😉
We also came home with this cute and quirky Captain’s Chair.
This little chair has all sorts of odd going on with it – and so of course I couldn’t love it more.
It’s missing a few rungs and spindles (one that is replaced by a strange and super long metal rod?), sits a bit unevenly, has a perfectly imperfect rustic finish, and other random cracks and marks and dings that I always find so appealing in a piece.
I simply couldn’t pass it up.
I’m not really sure just where and/or what I’m going to do with this quirky little chair, but for now I’m trying it out in the living room, next to the fireplace.
I have moments when I walk into the room and really love it there…
And then I have moments when I walk into the room and I’m not so sure…
What do you think?
Should it stay?
Or should it go?

I adore trips like that where everything you see is a great find!!! Good for you!!! As far as your question about the chair & where it is, I am not a matchy-matchy person, but I do like balance. I thought the captain’s chair would look too small in scale across from the gray chair, but I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it looks. So complimentary with the wood against the upholstered chair. And if you do want balance, you can always add a tin similar to the ones you have on the mantel behind the wood chair and fill it with tall white birch stems, cotton blossoms or even greenery now that Christmas is coming. But I do love the rustic look of the chair!!! Cannot wait to see your other finds from that trip!!!

Thanks Michele! It’s such a sweet little chair – it might be a bit smaller than what it should – but I love having it out. 😀

Love the chair….I’m a sucker for interesting single wood chairs. I have them everywhere, even my garden. Since you asked for input, I think the chair is too small and not to scale with the other pieces and fireplace in that room. Love your blog!
Tonya says
Thanks Nancy! I don’t disagree that it is small and a little out of scale – but I have decided that for now, I’m not going to worry about that and let it stay. I’m enjoying have it out. Perfection is overrated anyway, right? 🙂

I like the idea of a chair there and this one suits but I, too, have concerns about the size in relation to other things in the room. You might improve its visual weight by using a soft rust colored throw for color or using something taller beside it like those wrought iron candle stands that are about 4 feet high.Just a thought… Isn’t it fun finding treasures!?
Tonya says
All great ideas Nancy! I wish I had room for candlesticks or a fun lamp. Finding treasures is so much fun!! 😀
Min says
Loving the chair and all of its unique quirks, it should stay 🙂
Tonya says
Thanks Min! I’m going to leave it be for a while. 😀

I love it. It (with the throw of course) screams cozy up by the fire willya and warm your toes. Its a great find.
Tonya says
Thank you Susan! It is an adorable little chair – I’m so lucky to have found it. 🙂
Angie M says
I really like the chair in that spot!
Tonya says
Thanks Angie! I think I’m going to let it live there for a while. 🙂
Cindy in Oklahoma says
This is tricky because these are the kinds of things I love. But my husband would say it has to go. I guess I’d have to let functionality decide…. because the patina says let it stay… but functionality might trump patina if it’s not functional as a chair…
Can’t wait to see the haul!
Tonya says
I should have mentioned that despite it’s “flaws” – it really is a sturdy chair and I have no concerns about it holding weight. And I’m with you – I LOVE the tone of that wood in the room right now. I think my biggest hang up is its small size compared to everything else in the room…but in all reality, I can’t have anything much bigger in that spot. I think I’ll leave it be right where it is for now. 🙂

i think the space needs a chair.
Tonya says
I agree – it does need a chair. Whether or not this is THE chair remains to be seen, but it will do for now. 🙂
