A Room in Layers

January 29, 2016

A Room in Layers

Have you ever come across a picture in a book, or a magazine, or Pinterest, and immediately thought, I love that room… That is exactly how I want my house to look…?

I’m going to bet the answer is yes. I have that thought multiple times a day myself.

It’s easy to look at these spaces as a whole and love them, but have you ever actually broken them down to see exactly which elements of the room are drawing you in? What it is that makes that room so appealing to you?

Favorite Design Books

Raise your hand if you love a good design book.

I know I do.

They look pretty sitting out on the coffee table and I love browsing through them when I’m dreaming up a new space. Not to mention, they’re often filled with all sorts of handy tips and tricks for decorating your home too.

While I’m always adding to my collection, there are a few that I turn to again and again, so I thought I would share some of my favorite design books with you today. 🙂

Yep, you read that right – I made a DIY!!

Once you see how simple this is, you’ll understand how I pulled it off. 🙂

Refreshing the Dining Room

Refreshing the Dining Room

I mentioned last week that I have a plan for a little dining room refresh this year.

I know what you’re probably thinking.

You’re probably saying to yourself, your dining room looks perfectly fine, why are you changing it…

The Weekend of the Wingback

January 20, 2016

The Weekend of the Wingback

For well over a year I have been looking for a new chair to replace the tired and worn little tan chair in our living room.  It’s not that I couldn’t find what I wanted, because I definitely picked out a few…

…usually to the tune of five to six hundred dollars more than I wanted to spend…

Raise your hand if you’ve been there. 🙁

Monday Inspiration

Good Morning!

I hope you all had a nice weekend. Ours was part lazy and part work. We spent Saturday just bumming around and then yesterday we started tackling cleaning and organizing our basement. We still have a long way to go before it’s done, but at least we have more than a small path cleared around the entire thing now. In more fun news, if you follow me on Instagram you saw that we have something new for our Living Room – I’ll be sharing more about that later this week. 🙂

The Winter Mantel

The Winter Mantel

I didn’t talk much before about how our mantel is currently decorated, but it’s probably my favorite part of the room right now. This mantel is always such a challenge for me because it’s only about six inches deep, so a lot of the pieces I’d like to use up there are too big, or I simply can’t arrange things to get the layered look I’m after. This time however, it all fell into place and I love it.

Winter Decorating (or lack thereof) in the Dining Room

January 13, 2016

Winter Decorating (or lack thereof) in the Dining Room

As far as decorating in the dining room goes, I don’t change it up much from season to season. Most of the décor in here is open storage – overflow from the kitchen since we have such little cupboard space in there.

For the most part, I like it this way. Who says pretty can’t be functional too? But it’s hard sometimes to keep the space feeling fresh when so much of the room stays the same out of necessity. I’ll let you in on a little secret: I have BIG plans for this room this year. I’m still in the thinking/day dreaming phase, so I’m not quite ready to share, but I’m pretty excited about it so far. 🙂

Monday Inspiration

Happy Monday!

Winter has officially hit us here in Chicago. With an extremely mild November and December, this single digit stuff is kind of a shock. We did get a fresh layer of snow on Saturday though, so at least it’s pretty. 🙂

Knowing it was going to be cold and snowy, I had all sorts of plans to be productive around the house this weekend, but…

Why is it that during the work week I have all these things I want to do, but don’t have the time – and then when I have the time on the weekends, I don’t want to do anything? Does this happen to you too?

Cozy Winter Living Room

Cozy Winter Living Room

“I realize there’s something incredibly honest about trees in winter, how they’re experts at letting things go.” – Jeffrey McDaniel

As much as I love the twinkling lights of Christmas, I do crave the simplicity and calm that takes over once it all gets packed away.  In some way, I always look forward to the days right after the season – when the house seems kind of bare and open.

When everything feels like a fresh start.

Each room a clean slate.

So many projects and possibilities start flooding my brain during these first few weeks of the new year – and although I know we’re not likely to finish every single one, it’s still exciting to think about.
