I have a crush.
I have a crush on a beautiful kilim rug – and it’s a problem.
You see, I fell head over heels, completely in love at first sight, with this beautiful kilim rug that is made of lovely shades of chocolate brown, beige, and ivory – and has the sweetest little white fringe on the ends.
I fell so in love with this rug, I immediately thought That’s it! That’s the rug I need in our upstairs hallway! It’s perfect!
And then I didn’t buy it.
I convinced myself I didn’t need to spend the money, and that I would find something similar at a much better price point.
Except I haven’t.
And it’s been almost two years.
And this beautiful kilim rug is no longer available.
Anywhere. 🙁
I bring this up because I want to “pretty up” our upstairs hallway – it’s a bit of a blank canvas right now and I feel like it’s deserving of some love and attention. After all, we pass through it countless times a day – and hallways need love too, right?
This poor little hallway is so neglected, that I couldn’t even find a picture of it anywhere so I snapped this one quickly with my phone – just to give you an idea-ish of what I’m working with.
Ironically enough, this hallway gets the best natural light in the whole house and yet I’m giving you this dark-taken at night-by phone-picture. 🙁 I’ll do better next time. Promise. 🙂
See, I’m so in love with that rug – I just can’t seem to settle on anything else. I have tried every Pottery Barn store in my area, watched Craigslist and Ebay – and still no luck. I’ve poured over website after website looking for something similar – and nothing will do.
I’ve looked at this one a couple of times, but fear the color is a little too bold for my taste:
And I do really enjoy this one, but I’m not sure if it’s enough color:
I’m also fairly certain as soon as I decide on a rug, that beautiful kilim rug of my dreams will miraculously appear somewhere. Isn’t that how things always seem to go?
While I contemplate rug options, I’m going to get some things on the walls in that little hallway. I have a completely awesome antique piece that I have been dying to get on the wall for some time now. And I’m in the process of a fun (or what I hope will be fun) little art project for another wall.
And while I’m putting all this together – you know I’m going to be thinking about that beautiful kilim rug and how perfect it would be for the space. *sigh* Sometimes, when you fall crazy in love with something, you just need to go for it. I would love to say “Lesson Learned” but I know I’ll make the same mistake again – because this isn’t the first time it’s happened.
What have you walked away from that you wish you hadn’t?

I understand your pain…that rug is gorgeous! I’ve learned my lesson at Home Goods…buy it, if you fall in love, because you can always return it, but it won’t be there again. I’ve walked away from a dresser, bench, and lamp from that store. They still haunt me!

I’ve done that so many times at Home Goods too – so frustrating! I’m not sure I’ll ever learn…:)

I continue to walk away from items I love at first sight, only to come back later and it’s gone. Fifteen years ago I was shopping at SAMs Club and saw the most intricately carved metal pumpkins. Well, at the time, they were a little pricey so I did not purchase them. For days they haunted me so I made another trip only to find they were sold out. Sold out everywhere and being a seasonal item they would not be getting any more in. Like you I searched and searched but could never find them. The next year while taking my daughter trick or treating with some friends we came to a home with the most beautifully lit metal pumpkins. They were massive and could be seen from the sidewalk. Let me tell you my heart starting racing and I knew I just knew they were the same pumpkins. I spoke with the homeowner and she that she had purchased them at SAMs club the year before and that her daughters were fighting over them. Sometimes we walk away for budget reasons or when we feel a purchase is excessive. My husband gets so angry when I do it, but I probably will continue to do so. Nelson37 has the right idea, bring it home you can always return it.

My husband gets so mad at me too! When will we ever learn, Kathleen? 🙂 Those pumpkins sound amazing by the way – I’d probably still be haunted by them too. 🙂

I feel your pain. My unrequited love of the moment is a jacket that I didn’t get. So now, I buy anything I slightly Fancy so this doesn’t happen again. Look for me on Hoarders.

Lol Jean! I know the feeling – you pass up something great so then you try to compensate by bringing home anything and everything for fear of making the same mistake. My whole basement looks like it should be on Hoarders – I’m afraid it’s going to start sneaking upstairs pretty soon.

It stinks!!! I now, after having been through what you are going through, tend to buy if I love and use the “I can always return it” phrase to comfort myself for spending the money. I recently found your blog and have to say it’s now one of my faves, and I read a lot of blogs. I went back to day one with you and read every post. Your taste is exactly as mine, I love your DIYs, heck, I just love everything about your blog. I’m so glad I found it!!!

Aww, you just made my weekend! Thank you! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the blog. I need to start reciting that “I can always return it” phrase when I’m at the stores – maybe I’ll stop passing up great stuff! 🙂
