I am not afraid to pick up a paint brush on a Friday night. True, I don’t like taking the room apart, shoving all the furniture into the center of the room, or washing paint brushes and rollers, but the actual painting part – I find that rather relaxing. It’s one of the few times when I can shut my mind off and just focus on the task at hand. By no means am I a perfect painter, but I’ve done it enough over the past ten years that I’ve become pretty okay at it. Jordan once commented that pretty soon our walls are going to stick out over our trim because I have so many coats on them. Tee-hee. 🙂
I’ve had a few questions lately about the paint colors in our home, so I thought I’d share them with you today in case others were interested as well. By the way – if you are ever curious about anything here on the blog that I haven’t addressed, please reach out to me via comments, my contact page, Facebook, or Instagram – I’m more than happy to answer your questions. 🙂
When I first looked at our house, I pictured it in light and airy shades of gray and white. So naturally, I went and painted it shades of dark brown, green, and beige before we moved in – I’ll share pictures and explain how that happened another day.
After about a year, I was feeling frustrated with how my rooms were coming together and I realized it was because I didn’t follow my initial intuition on what this house wanted (I don’t know about you, but my house totally talks to me and tells me what it wants to be. Say what? Yours doesn’t?? 🙂 ) So, I started transitioning things over to my original gray and white plan. Once I had a foundation that felt right, the rest of the décor just started falling into place – and I really started to love my home. If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: paint is the quickest, cheapest way to change the look of a room. You hear it so much because it’s true.
We now have a soothing, soft color palette that flows effortlessly from one room to another. Are there a couple of rooms still on my painting radar? Yes – I keep finding myself drawn to more white than gray – but I’m in no rush, what I have is fine for now. 🙂
Although I will likely change a wall color or two down the road (I have had a sample of a color called Cloud Nine on the dining room wall for over a year now, so it’s bound to happen sooner or later), I will probably stay within this general color palette – it makes me happy and seems to fit our house well.
What are some of your favorite paint colors?
P.S. Did you all see Simply White has been voted Benjamin Moore’s Color of the Year for 2016? If you’re looking for a fail-safe, goes with anything white – this is the one. 🙂

I just bought BM Cloud Cover and put a small splat on the wall. I’m worried it’s going to be a cold light gray. Yet your photos looks very nice. I even found an article that calls Cloud Cover a light cream.
Tonya says
Light plays such an important factor in how colors appear in a space. I have Cloud Cover in my entry, up the stair wall and in the upstairs hall – and there are certain times of the day when it looks like two different colors between the little entry and upstairs hall – which gets lots of light and tends to look like a creamy off white, and the walls up the stairs – which tend to be dark and looks like a soft, pale gray. It could also depend on what color you’re painting over and what other colors you have surrounding it – as it might pick up different undertones depending on what is near. Good luck!

I love your paint colors! And your whole house! I’m sorry if you’ve addressed this elsewhere, but what color are your guest room walls?
Tonya says
Hi Corrie!! This is terrible, but I can’t remember for sure what color those walls are. They are either Sandy Hook Gray or Old Salem Gray, both by Benjamin Moore. I had an entirely different color scheme going on in this house when we bought it, and that room has yet to be repainted to go with the new, lighter scheme. I guess I got rid of whatever was left of the current wall color, because I can’t find the can anywhere – but I do know it’s definitely one of those two colors. Hope that helps. So sorry!! 🙁

Love your home, beautiful!! What does the sign in your dining room say? It looks like a blue background with black frame with some sort of poem?
Tonya says
Thank you, Mary! That sign is actually a reproduction of a vintage turnpike fare sign that I found on clearance at Pottery Barn a few years back. It’s made entirely of wood and painted black with gold lettering. I think I have a better picture up somewhere here on the blog. I’ll try to remember to take a quick picture next time I’m doing something in the dining room – it is a unique sign. 🙂
