Thoughts on a Chair

March 16, 2015

It’s no secret that I do not love my sofa.  It’s comfortable enough, and has the slipcovered “pottery barn look” I want, but it’s green.  And it’s big.  lr.photoshop

It was bought for a previous house with a much wider living room.  Our living room in this house is very narrow and the big, green, monster sectional swallows the whole room.  living roomIf the color were different I would probably be ok dealing with the size, but I’m tired of feeling trapped by the green. Way back when this sofa was purchased, I settled on the green because my only other options were denim (not my style) or white (which I was too scared of at the time – but now would give anything to have), and because I thought if I ever got tired of the green I would just buy a new slipcover.  Fast forward seven years and the store has discontinued the sofa and slipcovers are no longer available.  But enough about the sofa – we’re supposed to be talking about the chair.

Perhaps the only thing I dislike more in my whole house than the sofa, is the chair in my living room.  chair1It’s tan – not one of my favorite colors, and micro suede – not a fan of the material, and the back panel (which is visible when you walk into the room) is held together with Velcro – not a good look.  chairbackThe chair is comfortable enough, but the sight of it is starting to make me angry – and who wants to be angry when they go to relax at the end of a long day?  I’ve considered just carrying the thing out to the curb, but it is nice to have the extra seat when we have people over,  so I’ve been reluctant to do that.

To make a long story short, I’ve started chair shopping.  Since the price of a new sofa has me a bit squeamish right now, I’m hoping that a new chair will A) no longer make me angry when I go to relax at the end of a long day, and B) make the green monster sofa seem not so bad (since I also highly dislike the way the tan and green look together).

I want something lighter in color, maybe with some tufting, like this…

I love this chair.  I would hit “add to cart” right this second if it weren’t double what I’m looking to spend.  I am wishing and hoping that I can find a lookalike more in line with my budget somewhere in my travels, but so far no luck.

Or no tufting, but still lighter in color, like this…

Again, totally love this chair, but way more than I currently have the budget for. I like how the back is shorter on this chair, especially considering my current layout requires the chair to sit in the middle of the room. Ikea has the new Stocksund chair that is very similar and at a great price point; however, when I went to the store to check it out I discovered the slipcover zips straight up the back and since this would be visible at all times in my room, I couldn’t deal with that.

Or maybe I could go simple, with neutral stripes like this…

Stripes were not originally on my radar, but I was browsing the Ashley Furniture store the other afternoon and this chair caught my eye.  It’s comfortable, the perfect size, the perfect price, and if I think way ahead down the road, would look rather nice with a new cream colored sofa.  I learned a lesson long ago to keep it neutral when it comes to the bigger purchases, especially since I grow bored with things quickly, and love to change things up, but I usually never tire of stripes.  Even so, I’m still a bit hesitant to settle on something with a pattern.

My search for the perfect chair has only just started, so I may not end up with anything like the choices above, but I’ll be sure to post an update when I find the right one!
